What is Form ADV?

Practical steps to check filings and search advisors on Best Investors.

The short answer

Form ADV is the registration and disclosure filing that U.S. investment advisers file with the SEC or a state. Part 1A is a structured questionnaire. Part 2 is the narrative brochure. Form CRS is a short client relationship summary for retail investors.

Best Investors is not the SEC. It republishes public IAPD feeds onto firm profiles so you can read Part 1A answers with item codes, then open the official file for the brochure or CRS PDF.

What to do

  1. Open the firm on Best Investors (Search by name or zip) and scroll to the Form ADV panel. Note codes such as 5F(2)(c) (regulatory AUM) and 5G(1) (financial planning). Each published code links to a Form ADV explainer.
  2. Read Item 11 on the same profile. Treat every Yes as a checked disclosure box. Open narratives or Disclosure Reporting Pages when they appear. For a walkthrough, see How do I read Item 11?.
  3. On IAPD, search the same firm by name or CRD. Download Part 2A (brochure) and Form CRS if available. Read fees, services, conflicts, and disciplinary summaries in the firm’s own words.
  4. Compare Part 1A checkboxes to the brochure. Item 5E may show fee categories. The brochure and your draft agreement should state amounts, billing timing, and what is not included.
  5. Keep the official Form ADV PDF open if a code on the profile is unclear. The form text is the source wording for each item.

What to look for on Best Investors

On a firm profile, the ADV panel shows Part 1A answers with item codes (for example 5F(2)(c), 5G(1), and the Item 11 block). Those codes match the SEC form. Click a code to open the explainer under /info/adv/.

Disclosures near the top of the profile surfaces Item 11 Yes answers. When the firm’s ADV PDF includes filled DRPs, event text (regulator, docket, allegations, sanctions) can appear on the same card. Roster advisors may show disclosure category flags. Those flags are not a full substitute for the firm’s brochure and IAPD file.

Search finds nearby offices by distance. Pro listings ($9.99/month) sort first in search and directories after the geographic fetch. That is paid placement, not a quality score.

Best Investors does not replace the brochure or Form CRS. Use this site to scan structured Part 1A answers. Use IAPD for the government original and the narrative PDFs. See Best Investors vs SEC IAPD.

Common mistakes

  • Reading only Part 1A checkboxes and skipping Part 2A and Form CRS on IAPD.
  • Treating a large 5F(2)(c) AUM figure as proof of better advice. AUM is self-reported scale, not quality.
  • Stopping at one Item 11 Yes. Neighboring lines often describe the same matter from different angles. Read the full set and any DRP text.
  • Confusing a broker or dual-registered person with an RIA-only firm. Broker history often lives on BrokerCheck as well as (or instead of) this firm’s ADV.
  • Assuming a Best Investors profile is the legal file. It is a display of public feeds. If the two disagree, trust IAPD.
  • Reading search order as an endorsement. Pro can place a paid listing above a closer unpaid listing.

Related questions

What is Form ADV Part 1A?

Part 1A is the structured half of Form ADV. Firms answer yes/no and numeric questions about ownership, clients, employees, AUM, advisory activities, and disclosure history. On Best Investors those answers appear with item codes so you can open a plain-language guide. Part 1A does not replace the brochure. It shows which boxes the firm checked, not the full fee schedule or conflict narrative.

What is the Form ADV brochure (Part 2)?

Part 2A is the firm brochure: a narrative about services, fees, methods, conflicts, and disciplinary information written for clients. Many firms also file brochure supplements (Part 2B) for supervised persons. Best Investors surfaces Part 1A item codes on the firm page. Download the brochure PDF from IAPD when you need fee language and conflict detail in the firm’s own wording.

What is Form CRS?

Form CRS (Client Relationship Summary) is a short document for retail investors. It covers relationship type, fees and costs, conflicts, standards of conduct, and where to find more information. It is not a full substitute for Part 2A. Open CRS on IAPD next to the brochure before you sign anything.

How do Part 1A codes relate to the brochure?

Use Part 1A as a map. A Yes on compensation item 5E or a services item under 5G flags topics that should appear in the brochure and your agreement. Then read the brochure for amounts, breakpoints, and conflict language. If Part 1A and Part 2 disagree, ask the firm in writing and verify the current filing on IAPD.

Where do I find Item 11 on Best Investors?

Open the firm profile. Check the Disclosures card for Yes flags and any DRP narratives. Also open the ADV panel’s Item 11 checklist so you see every No as well as every Yes. Start with the Item 11 section guide and How do I read Item 11? if the wording is dense.

Limits

Best Investors is not a regulator and not the SEC. This page is not legal advice or investment advice.

Form ADV answers are self-reported by the adviser. Best Investors does not audit AUM, rewrite Item 11, or certify brochure accuracy.

Pro placement means a paid listing can appear above a closer unpaid listing. Distance remains the geographic sort. Pro is applied after that fetch.

Feed timing: firm pages update after ingest jobs run. IAPD can show a newer filing before Best Investors rebuilds the profile.

A clean Part 1A panel is not a government endorsement. Always open the brochure and Form CRS on IAPD before you hire.
