Open Best Investors Search, enter your zip, and shortlist nearby registered investment adviser (RIA) firms and offices. Read each firm’s Form ADV answers and Form CRS on the profile, then confirm the same CRD on SEC IAPD. RIA advisers generally owe a fiduciary duty under the Advisers Act when they give investment advice, but “fiduciary” is not a directory checkbox. Ask every candidate, in writing: “Are you a fiduciary for this engagement?”
5G), compensation (5E), AUM (5F), and disclosure (Item 11). Open the brochure and Form CRS when linked.Best Investors republishes public SEC IAPD feeds. It is not the SEC. Coverage on the site is 35,000+ registered firms and 600,000+ investment professionals.
Zip and distance. Search returns nearby offices sorted by distance from the location you entered. Use that to build a local shortlist, not to score quality.
Pro badge and sort. Pro listings ($9.99/month) sort first in search and directories after the geographic fetch. That is paid advertising. A Pro badge does not mean fiduciary status or a cleaner record.
Firm ADV panel. Part 1A answers appear with item codes (for example 5F(2)(c) for regulatory AUM and 5G(1) for financial planning). Each published code links to an ADV explainer. Compare services and fee types before you call.
Brochure and Form CRS. When available, read conflicts, fees, and standard of conduct language in the firm’s own words. Website marketing is not a substitute.
Claim / contact. Claimed owners can take questions through the site. A reply helps with logistics. It does not replace IAPD verification or a written fiduciary answer for your engagement.
What you will not see. There is no “fiduciary” filter that proves every listing owes you that duty for every product or account. Dual-registered people may also appear in broker contexts. Treat the directory as a filing map, then verify.
5F) or a quiet-looking Item 11 as proof of quality. Filings are self-reported.Not automatically for every product, account, or conversation. RIA advisers generally owe fiduciary duty under the Advisers Act when they advise you as an investment adviser. The directory does not stamp “fiduciary” on each row. Read Form ADV, the brochure, and Form CRS, then ask for the standard of care for your engagement in writing.
IAPD is the official government database. Best Investors reads the same public feeds into firm, advisor, and office pages you can search by zip, with item-coded ADV answers on the profile. Browse nearby options here. If a profile disagrees with IAPD, use the IAPD file for that CRD. Details: Best Investors vs SEC IAPD.
Ask who will advise you day to day, how the firm is paid, and whether commissions or product revenue can apply. Ask for Form CRS and the brochure if you lack them. Ask: “Are you a fiduciary for this engagement?” and “When would that duty not apply?” Compare the answers to the filing.
After distance-based results are fetched, Pro listings ($9.99/month) sort first. That is advertising, not a fiduciary ranking. Compare ADV fields the same way for every firm on your shortlist.
Search is built around location and filing data, not a “fee-only fiduciary” switch. Use Form ADV compensation answers (5E), Form CRS, and the brochure, then confirm in conversation. See Fee-only vs fee-based.
Best Investors is not a regulator and not legal or investment advice. A clean profile here is not a government endorsement and not proof that an adviser is your fiduciary for every engagement.
Form ADV answers are self-reported by the adviser. Best Investors does not audit AUM, rewrite Item 11 narratives, or certify marketing claims.
Pro placement means a paid listing can appear above a closer unpaid listing. Distance still drives the geographic fetch. Pro is applied after that. Read that as advertising, not as a quality or fiduciary score.
Feed timing can lag a cycle behind IAPD. If anything conflicts, open the CRD on IAPD and treat that file as the original.
