CFP vs CFA

A CFP is a planning certification. A CFA is an investment-analysis charter. Neither mark is the license. Check Form ADV and BrokerCheck too.

The short answer

A CFP is a financial-planning certificate from CFP Board. A CFA is an investment-analysis credential from CFA Institute. People who earn it are called CFA charterholders.

Neither mark is the government license to give advice or to sell securities. That license is adviser registration, broker registration, or both.

Pick a CFP when you want a written plan that covers retirement, tax, insurance, and estate questions along with the investments. A CFA is the usual mark for researching investments and running portfolios. One person can hold both.

What to do

  1. Open Search and find the person and their firm. Letters on a profile are a claim until you check them.
  2. If they say CFP, confirm the person on cfp.net. If they say CFA, confirm the charter with CFA Institute. A line on a website is not the directory.
  3. Open the firm ADV panel anyway. Read Item 5G and see whether the firm reports financial planning, portfolio management, or both. The letters do not fill in that box for you.
  4. Look up the firm on IAPD and the person on BrokerCheck. A planning mark and a broker license can sit on the same person. How to check registration is the order to follow.
  5. Read Item 5E and the fee section of the brochure before you hire someone because of the letters. The mark does not set the price. See how much a financial advisor costs.
  6. Email: "Which services will you do for me, which mark covers that work, and will the account be advice, brokerage, or both?" Keep the reply with the agreement.

What to look for on Best Investors

  • Person page versus firm page. Jobs and exams sit on the person. Form ADV sits on the firm. A CFP or CFA line, when the firm typed it in, does not replace Item 5G.
  • Item 5G. These boxes say what services the firm reports. Match "financial planning" and "portfolio management" to the job you want. A CFA who only runs a model, and a CFP who only writes a plan, are different hires.
  • Item 11 on the firm. These rows are about past disclosures, not about whether a test was hard. Read Item 11 on its own.
  • Claim badge. Claiming a listing does not verify a CFP or a CFA. Use the group's own directory.

Common mistakes

  • Hiring the letters and never opening Form ADV. The mark and the registration answer different questions.
  • Assuming a CFA will build a retirement paycheck plan, a Social Security timing page, or an insurance review. Ask. Many charterholders do investment work and do not offer themselves as planners.
  • Assuming a CFP is a stronger stock analyst than a CFA. The certificates train different jobs.
  • Treating either mark as proof of fee-only pay. Pay is Item 5E and the brochure. See fee-only vs fee-based.
  • Ignoring a broker license because the card leads with CFP. Open BrokerCheck.

Related questions

Do I need a CFP to get a fiduciary relationship?

No. On an advice account, the fiduciary duty comes from the adviser relationship, not from the letters. CFP Board adds its own fiduciary rule when a CFP gives financial advice. You still confirm the account type. See fiduciary vs financial advisor.

Is a CFA the better credential?

It is the better match for investment research. It is not automatically a better match for a household plan, unless that person also does planning and will put that work in the agreement. Hire the job first. Then confirm the mark.

What about a ChFC or a CPA?

A ChFC is another planning certificate. A CPA is a tax license. Some people hold those next to a CFP or a CFA. This page compares CFP and CFA only. Ask who signs the tax return and who signs the investment agreement.

The profile lists the letters. Why check a second site?

Profiles can be wrong, old, or typed in by the firm. CFP Board and CFA Institute keep their own directories. A two-minute check beats a polished bio.

Limits

Best Investors does not award the CFP or the CFA, and we do not police those directories. This page is not legal or investment advice.

The firm filled out Form ADV. We do not audit assets, fees, or Item 11. If our page and IAPD disagree, use IAPD.

Passing an exam is not a promise about future returns, a blank Item 11, or a low fee.
